TEXTILE DESIGN STUDIES

Fabric painting using gouache

Fabric

My version that I painted

My studies at a Berkeley textile design school helped me train my eye to match color with hairline accuracy.

This assignment was to draw, then paint the design using gouache paints. (The tape was added to define the margins.)

Any adjustment of color on my version was intentional!

PROTOTYPE DESIGN

One of my design jobs was hand painting prototypes of resin figurines for a company, Willits Designs. I was a paintmaster painter and senior color consultant.

I painted everything from little piggies to The Borg to Jesus and everything in between!

My pieces were used to photograph for the catalog and/or sent to the factory in Asia to be hand painted and sold commercially.

In the catalog!

My favorite job ever was as a product developer at HearthSong, developing European-style wooden toys, craft kits and outdoor products for kids.

This Wooden Merry-Go-Round was the first product where I was the lead developer, and, the laison between U.S. Customs and our company

Think the movie 'Big'. I played with and designed toys for a living! Our new product meetings were epic, and the "free" table was too!

Sadly, HearthSong went corporate and moved its headquarters to Virginia. I was offered a transfer, but opted to stay in the Bay Area.

Fast forward to August 2023...

Plumeria EDITED no copyright.jpeg

I began creating this website (my very first, in fact) from scratch, right after the devasting fires in Lahaina, Maui.

Beyond comprehension...

Having been rooted to the aina in the islands for two decades, I felt like a spear had pierced my heart. I had to do something...

It became clear that I was to offer prints of my painting Plumerias at Midnight and to donate half of the proceeds to the recovery effort in Lahaina, which I did.

And I didn't stop there; I kept going.

I had skills and a background in these areas:

  • graphic + web design

  • photography + photo editing

  • copywriting

  • prototype and product design

  • textile design

So, I combined these facets of my creativity to offer:

1. giclée canvas prints of my original watercolor paintings

2. art merch with images of my original watercolor paintings printed on them

The entire scope of this endeavor has been (and continues to be) deeply moving and, happy making!
