About Ornamental Banana
 
An old grove of Ornamental Banana, also known as Flowering Banana, grew in my front yard in Kainaliu, Kona. Bred solely for their blossom, there are tiny lime-green bananas with orangey flowers on top, at the base of the hot pink bud.
 
Ornamental Bananas are, surprisingly, an evergreen that are native to the eastern Himalayas. They can even survive in freezing temperatures. My grove was lucky to be living in Hawaii!!
 
The flowers grow on a single stalk up to 6 feet high. The leaves sprout from single stalks up to 15 feet high.
